Advice for Potty Training Girls

Parents who are preparing to potty train their daughter can benefit from a few helpful tips. Potty training girls is different in some ways than potty training boys. Most people claim girls are easier to potty train than boys, but it really depends on the individual child and not their gender. The first thing to do when preparing to potty train is make sure your daughter is ready to begin this process. You will need to broach the subject with her and watch for signs of readiness. Attempting to force potty training on any child is a bad idea.

For example, when shopping with your child take her to the toddler girls' underwear section and let her browse the selection. She may decide that she wants to wear underpants instead of a diaper. There are all kinds of choices out there, from solid colors to prints featuring favorite cartoon characters. However if your child seems uninterested don't push them, they probably just need more time. The average potty training age ranges between 18 and 36 months, however some toddlers may train earlier or later.

One way to encourage readiness and teach by example is for moms to take their daughters to the bathroom with them and let them observe the process. Children often want to emulate their parents and using the potty is no exception. When your child seems ready, take her shopping for a potty seat that she chooses herself. If there are certain features you need, give her a choice between a few different models. Some potties have lights, sound and are very colorful, while others are more simple. There are potty seats that fit onto the adult toilet for your child to sit on. This is convenient because there is no waste to clean up, all you have to do is flush.

You might also want to set up a schedule of some sort when potty training girls. Try to determine when your daughter is most likely to use the bathroom by observing her, then lead her gently to the potty and ask her to sit for a few minutes at those times. For some youngsters, reading a favorite book can help. Implementing a reward system such as a sticker chart or prizes for potty milestones reached may also help motivate your child, but only if they are ready to be potty trained.
